At last: a book that compiles the memories of Emelita Cohen of the Cohen Bray House in one place.  All the stories you have heard about Emelita, her parents and her siblings are now in one place. Emelita Cohen, youngest child of Alfred Henry and Emma Bray Cohen, died in 1988 and wrote extensively about her life at 1440 29th Avenue.

Emelita wrote about her childhood in Fruitvale; Christmas festivities; her father with his many hobbies and her adored mother.  She describes family vacations; the family dogs; her love of horses; and her brother Doug and her sisters Alfred and Marion.  Her writing is so immediate you are almost  in the smoking room with her at Christmas time.  She also included stories about visiting Fernside, the birthplace of Alfred Henry Cohen.  It transforms all these memories into a wonderful depiction of the early years of the house and the idyllic lives of its occupants.

The book has many pictures which add enormously to the stories Emelita tells.  It really takes you back to the lives of her family in the early 20th century.

Mara Melandry, one of our volunteers, has compiled these memories into a lovely book.
